How It Works
Common Questions
Tuffskin is a proprietary optically clear stone laminate, similar to a phone screen protector but engineered for countertops. It is not a liquid sealer. The 4-mil polyester film bonds directly to the stone surface, creating a barrier that is acid-proof, stain-proof, and heat-resistant up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. It is available in both gloss and satin finishes to match polished or honed stone.
Tuffskin comes with a 10-year warranty against etching and staining. In practice, hotels typically replace the film every 8 to 10 years, busy restaurants every 1 to 5 years, and residential kitchens every 4 to 8 years. The film remains acid, alkaline, water, and oil-proof for as long as it is on the surface, regardless of age.
Most clients say their stone actually looks better after installation. Tuffskin has a color-enhancing effect that brings out the natural veining and depth of the marble. The satin finish matches a honed stone, and the gloss finish matches a polished stone. It is virtually invisible to the naked eye.
Marble countertop restoration typically costs between $5 and $12 per square foot depending on the severity of damage. A standard kitchen with 30 to 60 square feet of marble usually runs $800 to $2,500. A small bathroom vanity can sometimes be done for $450 to $750. Floor restoration is priced per square foot and varies with the area size. We provide exact quotes during a complimentary on-site consultation.
In the vast majority of cases, yes. Etching, dullness, scratches, and most stains are fully reversible through professional diamond honing and polishing. The restoration process removes the damaged top layer and brings the stone back to its original finish, whether polished or honed. We always assess the stone first and give you an honest recommendation before starting any work.
Restoration is the right call in the majority of cases. Professional restoration delivers 80 to 95 percent of the visual impact of replacement at roughly 10 to 30 percent of the cost. Marble replacement typically runs $50 to $150 per square foot when you factor in demolition, fabrication, plumbing, and installation. Restoration on a comparable countertop runs $5 to $12 per square foot. Replacement only makes sense when the stone is structurally failing or you want an entirely different material.
Use any non-abrasive stone cleaner or a glass cleaner like Sprayway. Wipe with a soft cloth or paper towel and finish with a dry microfiber towel. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scrub pads, and do not cut directly on the surface. Hot pans can be placed on Tuffskin up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
An average residential kitchen takes about one day. Hotel projects can be completed at 10 to 25 rooms per day. Countertops can be used within 2 hours of installation, with full bond strength reached at 72 hours. The process creates no odors and is VOC compliant.
The one thing to avoid is cutting directly on the surface with a knife. Tuffskin is scratch-resistant for everyday wear, but a sharp blade pressed down with force will cut through the film just like it would cut through a phone screen protector. Always use a cutting board. If the film does get damaged from a cut or heavy impact, it can be easily removed and replaced without any harm to the stone underneath.
